A custom license plate takes longer to receive in comparison to a standard license plate, but it is a fun way to personalize your vehicle. You need to understand your state's regulations when it comes to custom license plates and follow its application instructions.

Instructions
  1. Step 1

Visit DMV.org and choose the state in which you drive to determine your state's specific rules for obtaining a custom license plate. You can also visit any DMV location to get this process started.

  2. Step 2

Scroll down to the personalized or custom plates section of the document and read the guidelines put forth by your state. This is the area where you will find information such as how many characters your custom license plate can have; the types of vehicles that the state allows to have personalized plates; and whether or not you need to use only letters, numbers or a combination of both.

  3. Step 3

Visit a DMV location or print an application (which is available online) and send it to the address given. On the application, you will need to provide information about your vehicle, such as its current license plate number, VIN number and its registration expiration date. Send any fees associated with the custom license plate with your application or it won't be processed.

  4. Step 4

Pick up your custom license plate. If you are able to order it online, your DMV will notify you when you are able to pick it up. You can expect to wait approximately 8 to 12 weeks for it to come in. If you order your custom plate at a DMV location, you will either be notified by mail or the plate may be sent directly to your postal address.

Tips & Warnings
  • Your vehicle must be insured if you are seeking a custom license plate.
