How to Install Blow-In Insulation

Proper insulation can make a world of difference in the energy efficiency of a house. Blow-in insulation comes with a fire retardant and consistently outperforms fiberglass insulation in energy savings tests. Easy to install, blow-in cellulose insulation makes a good project for home owners looking to save money during construction or remodeling.

• Insulation blower

Instructions

1. Clean out the stud and rafter bays of any debris or large items. Use a shop vac to suck up any debris in the bottom of the bay.

2. Insert a bale (or more if it will hold it) of blow-in insulation into the hopper of the spray machine. Remove the plastic and dump it in, making sure to break up any clumps. Connect a water hose to the machine and turn on the water supply.

3. Spray the insulation into the stud or rafter bays. Start spraying the insulation at the bottom of the stud bay and work your way to the top. For rafters, start by blowing the insulation in each end of the rafter bay and then fill in the middle. The insulation should be applied to the thickness of the studs or rafters.

4. Take a thin board and remove excess insulation while it is still damp. Place the board on two studs and move it from top to bottom while moving it from side to side. This will remove any insulation that stands outside the studs. In rafter bays it is OK to leave the insulation standing proud of the top of the rafters.

5. Cover the insulation with netting and staple the netting to the studs before the insulation dries.. Don't worry about doing this for insulation in rafters. The netting will keep the insulation from falling out. The netting can usually be purchased at the same places that sell the blow-in insulation. Allow the insulation to dry for 24 to 36 hours before covering it up with wall board.

Tips & Warnings

• Insulation that falls on the floor can be placed in the hopper and used again.
