How to Create Newsletter Templates
Designing a newsletter today is easier than it's ever been. Software like Microsoft Word comes with templates already in place. Desktop publishing software like Microsoft's Publisher and Serif PagePlus also have templates designed to make the creation of newsletters faster and easier than ever before. With Desktop publishing software, you can use a template already made or deign and create your own with a few simple steps.

1
Choose the software you want to use to create your newsletter template. You can use Microsoft Word if you have it, or go with a desktop publishing (DP) program like Publisher, InDesign or PagePlus (see Resources). PagePlus is free, full-featured DP software from Serif that allows you to create newsletters and other desktop publishing documents from templates you can customize to suit your needs.

2
Decide how many columns you'd like your newsletter to be. The typical choices are two or three columns. Two seems to make the appearance of the newsletter cleaner, so two columns with no more than three small graphics per page is an appealing layout.

3
Click the "File" menu, choose "New" and open the newsletter template closest to the one that looks like the newsletter you want to design.
-
4
Modify the template the way you want. Add or delete any graphic placeholders in the template either by selecting the placeholder you want to delete and pressing the "Delete" key on your keyboard or by choosing "Picture" from the "Insert" menu to add a placeholder.
-
5
Modify the "Title" section of the newsletter template by selecting the text box where the generic template title is and inserting the title of your newsletter.
-
6
Delete or add columns to match the column number you've decided on for your newsletter. Replace generic graphics in the template with your own by selecting the graphic boxes and using the "Insert" menu to insert your pictures.
-
7
Select the text elements of the newsletter template one at a time and format the font type and style you want to use. Once you've done this, choose "Save As" from the "File" menu and select the "Template" option. Give the template the name of your newsletter so you can easily identify it when you need to use the template next.
