How to Make a Coolie Hat
The coolie hat is the perfect craft for a Saturday afternoon. Whether your child has been studying about Southeast Asia, or you just want to give her a cute hat, this coolie hat is the perfect project. This wide-brimmed hat is used to protect field workers from sun and rain.

Tie the string to a pencil. This will help while marking a circle and will keep the string and pencil taut.

Place the other end of the string on the center of the red card. Use tape to keep the string secure.

Draw the circle by pulling the pencil around the red card, keeping the string taut. Press firmly on the card so that you can see the pencil mark for the circle.

Use scissors to cut out the circle on the red paper. Once the circle is cut, cut out one part or segment of circle. To decide on how much you need to cut out, imagine one part of the whole, or one-sixth.

Take the gold paint and use your imagination to draw on the hat. Some ideas are shapes, animal figures or Chinese calligraphy characters.

Form a wide cone by bending the edges of the red circle. Use the glue to hold the edges in place.

Hold the hat to the head by attaching a ribbon. Use glue to secure the ribbon to the top of the hat. Tie the ribbon under the neck.
