How to Teach Basic Math to an Adult

Learning Math

To teach basic math to an adult is to build confidence in real-life problem-solving since math is used every day. A carpenter must know how to read a ruler, a cook must be able to work with fractions, and a cashier must be able to count change. Adults are sometimes nervous about math, not sure as to when they will use it, and overlooking the math they are already using each day. You will want to encourage the learner with everyday applications each step of the way.

Instructions

  1. Basic Math

    • 1

First, select a book for general math, either a new or used book, if not one from your local library. Use a book with examples and practice problems.

    • 2
      Change For Your Dollar

Start with addition, then subtraction. Vary the lesson time such as: using the book and then switch to time with flash cards or computer games, back to the book and then use money to count back change.

    • 3

Next, you will work through multiplication and division. Have the learner make multiplication tables and work on speed with flash cards or computer games.

    • 4

Now for decimals, fractions, and percentages. This is a process of learning rules while continuing to practice the addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division skills.

    • 5

Spend time on negative numbers and emphasize the fact that they do relate to real life. If a person owes money, we are working with negatives, and if a diver goes below the surface, you have negatives.

    • 6
      Reading The Ruler

Finally, the learner is ready for measurements. Use a ruler with both standard and metric markings.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use visuals and hands-on as much as possible.

  • Do not just teach "How," but include the "Why" and "When" it is used.
