Many novice cooks are flummoxed when they purchase a new wok and find that it includes a ring inside the box. This wok ring might not even be needed or it might need to be replaced. The determining factors concerning when to use a wok ring are the type of stove one has and the size of the burners. In general, gas ranges might not even require the use of a wok ring, but electric burners almost always do.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Place the wok onto one of your stove top burners with the heat turned off. If the wok will not stay stable, you will need to use a wok ring. In most instances, the grates around your gas burner will hold up the wok sufficiently without a wok ring, but the flat coils of an electric stove will need wok rings to be used.

  2. Step 2

Turn the wok ring so that the wider end is pointing up.

  3. Step 3

Place the wok ring on top of the burner you intend to use for cooking with your wok.

  4. Step 4

Set the wok back on top of the wok ring and look at the height of the wok just above the burner. If your wok ring is too high or too low, you need to replace it.

  5. Step 5

Look at the structure of the wok ring. If you have a gas stove, you want a ring with open sides, but if you have an electric stove, you will need one with closed sides that has several air holes around it. Replace your wok ring with the proper one if yours was not included with your wok. (See reference 1)
