How to Install a Quad Core Processor

Knowing how to install a quad-core processor is an integral part of building or upgrading a computer system. While possibly 1 of the most important upgrade processes you can undertake, it is simply and quick to do. Though careful handling must be observed, installing a quad-core processor is an easy task and can be accomplished in a few minutes.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the processor retention mechanism by unlatching the processor socket lever to the side of the retention unit. This socket is located at the upper left area of the board.

    • 2

Lift the processor retention bracket covering the socket. This bracket opens on a hinge away from the processor socket.

    • 3

Insert the quad-core processor into the processor socket on the motherboard. This socket is keyed so the processor will only fit in 1 orientation. The processor should fall easily into place. Close the socket's processor retention bracket over the processor. Secure the retention bracket down on the quad core processor by locking the socket retention lever back into place.

Tips & Warnings

  • Pre-plan all processor installations to avoid hardware damage.

  • Forcing a quad-core processor into its socket in the wrong orientation will damage the processor and possibly the motherboard. Never touch the processor pins or socket pins when installing a quad core processor.
