If you ever have a problem with your toilet and water is draining onto your floor, having a toilet shut-off valve will keep you from having a major house repair. The shut-off valve allows you to do work on your toilet without having to shut off the main water line every time. There are many different types of valves, as well as diameters of the pipe sizes. Make sure you purchase the correct size.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Wrench
  • Plumbers Tape
  • Shut off Valve
  1. Step 1

Shut off the main water line. Turn on sink to make sure water is shut off. Flush toilet to get water out of tank.

  2. Step 2

Using your wrench, remove the flexible tubing bolt attached to the pipe in the wall.

  3. Step 3

Take the plumber's tape and put it around the threads of the pipe sticking out of the wall. Make sure to do it in a clockwise motion; you only need to go around a few times. Put plumber's tape on the threaded part of the shut-off valve.

  4. Step 4

Take the shut-off valve and put it on the pipe with the threads. Turn it clockwise until it is tight. Take the wrench and tighten the valve. Make sure you do not over tighten the valve or it will break. Connect the flexible tube to the new shut off valve.

  5. Step 5

Turn on the main water line. Turn on shut off valve and check for leaks.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you do not know the size of the pipe, bring the flexible tube that was attached with you when you purchase a new one.
  • When working with water, always make sure you are not around any electrical items.
