Step 1
Choose a weight that will be manageable. Two-burner stoves make the cooking go faster, but add weight to your pack. For longer backwoods trips, consider a single-burner tank that is both lightweight and fuel efficient.
-
Step 2
Learn which type of fuel is needed for the stove you wish to buy. Propane gas canisters are convenient, but tend to burn fuel faster than stoves that use refillable tanks and liquid fuel. Check the weight of fuel canisters. You'll have to carry in everything you'll need, and two to three spare canisters of fuel will add at least 10 pounds to your load.

Step 3
Consider a mechanical or electronic push-button ignition switch for convenience, but always remember to pack wooden matches and butane lighters in case the automatic switch fails.
-
Step 4
Look for convenience features. Adjustable flame knobs, a carrying case and a windscreen that protects the burner while cooking are all useful, but may add weight.
