Make a Strawberry Planter

If you've never tasted ripened-on-the-vine strawberries, you will be astonished at the full-flavored difference of home-grown berries. Not everyone has the time or space to plant a whole garden full of strawberries. Fortunately, it's fairly simple to make a strawberry planter. Plant your strawberries in a plastic or terra cotta pot with holes on the sides for the plants. Alternately, plant several strawberry plants in a single, large container, such as a wooden barrel or planter pot. Place your planter on a sunny porch, balcony or landing, and enjoy a bounty of fresh strawberries. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Choose small strawberry plants that will fit into the side openings of your planter. Purchase a few larger plants for the top of the container, and enough bagged potting soil to fill the pot.

    • 2

Pour gravel, marbles or rocks into the bottom of the strawberry pot, over the drain holes. This will help the water drain through, and not settle at the bottom of the container.

    • 3

Fill the container with potting soil until it reaches the first side openings. Place your strawberry plants into the holes, roots in. Pour additional potting soil into the strawberry planter. Gently press down the dirt from inside the pot and outside the opening to make sure the plant is securely anchored.

    • 4

Pour soil into the container until it reaches the level of the next side openings. Repeat Step 3. Continue the process until there is just enough room for the final strawberry plants on the top.

    • 5

Place the top strawberry plants into the strawberry container. Pour soil around the plants and gently press down to anchor them in the pot. Give the strawberry planter a good watering.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use a fertilizer that's made for vegetables (1 to 2 to 1 ratio) about every two weeks. Drape netting over the top of your container if birds try and eat your strawberries.
