Planting your own bell pepper seeds or bell pepper plants, which can then be used for their seedlings, can save you tens of dollars on grocery costs as well as ensure that your bell peppers are free of pesticides and fertilizers. While the process is moderately easy, with consideration made for the season, you can plant bell pepper seeds or bell pepper plants to yield healthy bell peppers in as little as 65 to 70 days depending on the variety.

Things You'll Need:

  • Spade
  • Planter
  • Miracle Grow

    Planting Bell pepper Seeds

  1. Step 1

Purchase a package of bell pepper seeds from a local Farmer's market. Expect to pay $1 to $2. Prices may vary.

  2. Step 2

Dry the seeds in an air-tight container and store, if still in the winter season. Seeds will be ready for planting in the spring.

  3. Step 3

Survey the area for direct sunlight. Choose an area where the seeds will receive sufficient sunlight.

  4. Step 4

Treat the soil with Miracle Grow to add nutrients and ensure proper growth. Use a planter or plant the seeds in your garden. Dig a shallow hole and distribute the seeds evenly. Pack the planter or hole with additional soil until level. Water the seeds.

  5. Planting Bell Pepper Plants

  6. Step 1

Treat the soil. Add manure or compost to prepare the soil for planting. Wait 2 to 3 days before proceeding to the next step.

  7. Step 2

Purchase a starter bell pepper plant. Observe the structure of the plant and select one that appears healthy and has little evidence of wilting or dullness of color.

  8. Step 3

Dig a hole in the ground measuring for the correct depth needed for the potted pepper plant.

  9. Step 4

Protect the root system with added nutrients and food. Add as directed and rake the soil to ensure even distribution.

  10. Step 5

Use both hands for easy handling and placement of the plant into the soil.

  11. Step 6

Distribute the root system evenly in the soil and pack with soil until plant is ground level.

  12. Step 7

Continue to press the soil firmly around the plant. Add water to complete the planting process.

Tips & Warnings
  • Do not overcrowd the soil with seeds.
  • Bell pepper seeds are very small.

on 7/23/2009 i just took the seeds out of the pepper i had for dinner one night, plopped them in some dirt mixed with some worm castings, left them on my window sill, watered them every couple of days and voila.. i think each seed produced a plant. easy . no need to buy or dry seeds.

I am also amused by the comment that the seeds are very very small. not compared to purslane seeds or a whole bunch of others i've planted.
