Mold and mildew are fungal growths that adhere to surfaces in areas that provide the right climate. Moisture, darkness, and warmth are three favorable climate conditions that contribute to mold and mildew not only forming, but growing and causing a very big problem. Mold and mildew have both been linked to respiratory problems aside from being unsightly. Mildew is a type of mold that adheres to fabrics. With all of the problems mildew causes, cleaning it is a must, as unpleasant as it may be.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Medium bristle brush
  • Vacuum cleaner
  • Bleach
  • Dish soap
  • Clean cloth
  • Fan
  1. Step 1

Brush the carpet with a medium bristle brush to loosen as much of the mildew as possible.

  2. Step 2

Vacuum up as much of the loose debris as possible or use a broom to sweep it away. If you're vacuuming it up, be sure to clean out the vacuum cleaner as soon as possible to get the mildew out of the house.

  3. Step 3

Make a solution of equal parts bleach and water in a spray bottle. Use color safe bleach if the carpet is any color besides white to avoid fading it.

  4. Step 4

Spray the area with the solution and allow it to soak for at least ten minutes.

  5. Step 5

Scrub the area with warm soapy water and a clean cloth and rinse the area with clear water and a clean cloth. Do not pour water directly onto the carpet.

  6. Step 6

Set a fan near the area to circulate air around it to help it to dry faster; once the area is completely dry, vacuum over it again to fluff the fibers back up.

Tips & Warnings
  • Vinegar or hydrogen peroxide area acceptable substitutes for bleach. Be sure to test a small indiscreet area of the carpet for colorfastness before using these alternative methods.
  • Wear gloves and a mask when cleaning up mildew and make sure to ventilate the area well when using bleach.
