How to Set Up '1&1' Email in Outlook Express

1&1 is a web-hosting and domain-name-registration company. As part of its web-hosting service, 1&1 also provides email access. If you have an email account with 1&1, there are two ways to access it: through webmail (see Resources) and through an email client stored on your computer. Outlook Express is one such email client and comes already installed on computers running Windows XP (Windows Vista provides a similar program called Windows Mail). Using Outlook Express will allow you more control over your email formatting than webmail and will allow you to draft emails while you are offline.

Instructions

    • 1

Start Outlook Express, click the "Tools" menu, and then select "Accounts."

    • 2

Click the "Mail" tab, and then press the "Add" button. A menu will pop up after clicking "Add." Choose the menu option for "Mail."

    • 3

The Internet Connection Wizard will appear and ask for a display name. This is the name that will appear on your sent emails. Click "Next," and the next screen will ask you for your email address. Enter your full email address here and click "Next." The next screen will ask you to enter the incoming (POP3) and outgoing (SMTP) mail server settings for 1&1. The settings are pop.1and1.com and smtp.1and1.com. After entering these servers, click "Next."

    • 4

Enter your full 1&1 email address or account number (which will look something like "m12345678-1") in the field that asks for your account name. Enter your password in the field asking for your password. If you would like Outlook Express to store your password so you will not have to enter it each time Outlook Express checks your email, check the "Remember password" box. Click "Next," and then click "Finish" on the final screen.

Highlight your newly set up account, listed as pop.1and1.com, on the "Internet Accounts" screen that remains open (if you closed it already, return to the screen by repeating Step 2 only), and then click "Properties." On the "pop.1and1.com Properties" screen, click the "Servers" tab. Then, check the box beside "My server requires authentication." Click the "Settings" button next to this option.

A new screen will pop up. Select the option "Use same settings as my incoming mail server" and then click "OK." Then, on the "pop.1and1.com Properties" screen, click "OK."
