How to Become an Over-50 Catalog Model

As the population of America grows older, the look of our favorite catalogs is changing as well. Over-50 catalog models are becoming more common as catalogs try to more realistically reflect their customers' lifestyles. If this trend continues, modeling agencies and catalogs will be on the lookout for models who are attractive, fit and appear to be 50 or older. If you were always interested in modeling but didn't have a chance, now may be a great time to try. Here are some steps you can take toward a career in modeling.

  1. Research

    • 1

Before you do anything, a self-assessment is in order. Are you comfortable and confident with the way you look? Do you enjoy having your picture taken? Do friends and family consider you photogenic? Are you comfortable in social situations with people you've never met before? Do you accept criticism well? If your answer to any of these questions is no, think carefully about whether a career in modeling is for you.

If you answered yes to the questions above, the next step is to research agencies. If you live in a large city there are probably several agencies based in your city. If not, look for the nearest agency to you. Review websites for each of the agencies and pay special attention to agencies that have an over-50 or "Classic" division. If your local agency does not have a 50-plus category, call to see if they are interested in older models before sending your application.

    • 3

After selecting the agencies you are interested in working with, review the application requirements for each. Some prefer printed photos sent through regular mail, while some ask for digital photos sent via email. Some agencies have "open call" sessions where they invite aspring models to come visit in person. If the agency website doesn't specify an open call, call them and ask if one is scheduled in the future. Open calls are a great way to learn more about the agency and meet other aspiring models.

    Applying to agencies

    • 4

Have a friend take photos of you for your application to the modeling agencies. Photos do not need to be taken by a professional photographer; most agencies are simply looking for a clear photo that shows how you look. Color photos are preferred to black and white. Unless the agency specifies differently, take one smiling, one not smiling, one full-length and one profile. Wear little or no makeup, simple, flattering clothing and keep the background as simple as possible so nothing detracts from you.

    • 5

Depending on the requirements of the agencies you will be applying to, you may need to have prints made of your photos. It is also a good idea to have some prints to bring to open-call casting sessions. Regular 4-by-6-inch prints are fine for most agencies unless otherwise specified.

    • 6

Following the directions on the agency website or those you have received over the phone, submit your photos and applications to the agencies of your choice. Don't be concerned if you don't hear back immediately; agencies may receive hundreds of applications every month and it can be difficult to respond to each one personally.

    • 7

If you don't get a response, consider reapplying in six months. An agency's casting requirements change seasonally and according to clients' needs, so it is worth sending photos in regularly. If your look changes dramatically--for example, a different hair color or style, or weight loss or gain--send updated photos to the agencies. Your new look may be the one they are looking for.

Tips & Warnings

  • Have a close friend or family member take your photos so you will feel and look relaxed and comfortable. Get a second opinion before sending your photos in. Ask someone who knows you well which photos look the most like you. Don't get discouraged if you don't hear from the agencies right away. Casting needs change all of the time, if you are committed to modeling keep trying until you find the right fit.

  • Reputable modeling agencies do not ask for payment from models. Be careful if an agency requests a fee for photography, makeup or other services. Be sure to ask exactly what you are paying for. Beware of costly portfolio packages from professional photographers or studios. Professional photography is not needed to apply to a modeling agency; most agencies prefer simple photography.
