How to Make Your Own Track Jackets

Track jackets, worn for utility and fashion style, are often needed in bulk to create a uniform appearance for a sports team. The jackets themselves are not much different from a standard jacket or hoodie; rather, they can usually be distinguished from other jackets and windbreakers by the team colors and lettering.

Instructions

    • 1

Unfold a large rectangle of the jacket fabric into one layer and lay it out on a flat surface. Over the fabric, lay a slightly oversized T-shirt, with the sleeves folded back. Trace around the outside edges of the T-shirt with a fabric pencil, then remove it from the fabric. Draw around the outside of your T-shirt shape, 1/2 inch from your original lines. Cut this shape from the fabric. This will be the back body piece of your track jacket.

    • 2

Fold the back body piece in half and lay it over a double layer of the jacket fabric. Trace around the outside, then remove the back body piece. Draw around the outside of those lines, 1/2 inch away from them, except at the center front edge, where the back body piece was folded. Add 1 inch there. Cut two of these pieces. These will serve as your left and right front body pieces.

    • 3

Lay one sleeve of the T-shirt on a double layer of the jacket fabric, lining the top of the sleeve up with the folded edge. Measure the length of your arm from the shoulder to the wrist, then mark that length on the fabric. Trace around the bottom of the T-shirt sleeve and connect it to the length mark to make a long sleeve, then add 1/2 inch to the bottom length and shoulder seam. Cut the piece from the fabric, then lay it out on another section of fabric. Cut a second piece for the other arm.

    • 4

Measure around the collar of the T-shirt and add 1 inch to the length. Draw a 6-inch-wide rectangle on your jacket fabric. Cut two of these rectangles to use as collar pieces. Measure around the bottom edge of the T-shirt; add 1 inch to the length. Draw a 5-1/2-inches wide rectangle on your ribbed fabric. Cut two of these rectangles to use as the bottom band pieces. Also measure around your wrists and add 1 inch, then cut four 5-1/2-inch rectangles in this length to use as wristbands.

Stitch the collar pieces, right sides together, at the top and sides. Turn the collar right-side out and press it flat. Fold the bottom band and the wristbands in half and pin them in place. Put them aside.

    • 6

Stitch the body back and front pieces together at the shoulder seams, wrong sides together. Open up the body piece and the sleeve pieces. Stitch the sleeves to the body at the shoulders. Pin and stitch the wristbands to the ends of the sleeves. Fold the body back down and stitch the side seams from wrist to bottom.

    • 7

Stitch the bottom band to the bottom of the shirt. At the center front edges, fold the edges under 1/2 inch and press them flat. Pin the zipper to each side, all the way from hem to collar. Stitch the zipper in place, using a zipper foot attachment on your machine. If desired, embroider a team logo on the back and front of the jacket or use iron-on letters and numbers.
