Many women choose to dye their hair, whether just to have another color or because they want to color the gray in their hair. While many women choose to color their hair, some are wary of commercial hair dyes because of the all chemicals in them and how they can damage a woman's hair. While bleach has also been a standby for lightening your hair, many women don't like to use it because of how harsh it can be in that it dries out your hair in addition to lightening it.

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Cut a lock of your hair from somewhere that won't show and tie it together with thread. This allows you to test what the peroxide is going to do to your hair before you actually put it on your hair so you can avoid ending up with damaged hair or with hair that is a poor color.

  2. Step 2

Fill your clean spray bottle half way with distilled water and fill the other half with peroxide. Use distilled water rather than tap water because tap water has chemicals in it that when mixed with peroxide and put on your hair could interfere with the coloring process and cause your hair to become a color other than what you want.

  3. Step 3

Put the lid on your spray bottle and shake it well to mix the distilled water and peroxide.

  4. Step 4

Test the piece of your hair that you cut off and tied with thread by spraying it with the mixture in your spray bottle. This way you will be able to see what color your hair will become ahead of time and you won't be shocked if the dye treatment doesn't come out the way you want.

  5. Step 5

    Wet your hair with water.

  6. Step 6

Spray the distilled water and peroxide mixture on your wet hair. Leave it on for 15 minutes and then rinse your hair.

  7. Step 7

Repeat the process until your hair is the color you want.

Tips & Warnings
  • Be sure to use a leave in conditioner regularly to counteract the drying effects of peroxide.
  • Hydrogen peroxide can drastically dry your hair out if you use it regularly. It is recommended that you use peroxide to lighten your hair in stages, do your first application one day, wait a few days and do your next application. Be aware that people with brown or black hair may get orange highlights when trying to dye their hair with peroxide.
