How to Make Gas with Baking Soda & Distilled Water

The most common way of getting carbon dioxide gas out of baking soda is seen in the baking process. The rising of dough, known as leavening, is due directly to the chemical reaction of baking soda with other agents.

  • Baking soda
  • Distilled water
  • Lemon juice
  • Flask
  • Heat source (Stove)

Instructions

      Mix baking soda with water in the flask.

      Heat the baking soda and water mixture until warm to the touch.

      Pour in lemon juice, and maintain heat.

    • 4

      Attach balloon to the neck of the flask.

Tips & Warnings

  • Any acidic liquid, in combination with heat and sodium bicarbonate, will produce CO2. Sodium bicarbonate and distilled water, alone, will not react.

  • Exercise caution when using any heat source. The heated solution may scald or burn.
