Rebooting an IBM laptop serves many purposes under varying conditions. Programs that change system files or settings require a restart to take effect, and adding or removing some devices from the laptop also require a restart. Restarting an IBM laptop is a basic user operation that should be understood by every IBM laptop owner.

Instructions

    Rebooting Your IBM Laptop

  1. Step 1

    Properly save all documents and files in any programs you might be using before the reboot attempt.

  2. Step 2

    Click "Start" then "Shutdown" from the resulting start menu.

  3. Step 3

    Press the power button once quickly to restore power to the laptop.

  4. Step 4

    Wait for your operating system to boot from the hard drive and continue operation as normal.

Tips & Warnings
  • To avoid operating system tasks that occur during a power down, hold the power-off button to force the machine to power off instead of letting the operating systems shut down your laptop.
  • Failure to save all program data and documents will result in data loss if the system is shut down.
