Are you needing a recommendation letter from a teacher? Here are some tips on how to ask a teacher for a letter of recommendation.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Computer
  • Envelope
  • Stamps
  • Paper
  1. Step 1

Select the teachers that you will ask for letters of recommendation. These need to be teachers or professors who have seen you perform outstanding work, and preferably are teachers of your career choice.

  2. Step 2

Ask the teacher in advance. I recommend at least one month in advance before the due date, preferably six weeks.

  3. Step 3

In some cases, the teachers might need to fill out a designated form from the school. (This is usually for college and graduate school applications.) In other cases, they will simply need to write a letter of recommendation. Provide the teacher with the form if necessary. Write a type-written, business letter to the teacher asking them to either fill out the form, or write a letter of recommendation for you.

  4. Step 4

Include a pre-addressed, and stamped envelope to the school or place of employment if the letter needs to mailed directly. Or, if the teacher will need to mail you the letter, includes a stamped envelope addressed to you. (It will need to be snail-mailed becuase it is a signed letter.)

  5. Step 5

It is best to hand the request in person, if possible. If that is not feasible, you might follow up with an e-mail just to check that they received the request. Be kind and do not nag.

  6. Step 6

    Be patient.

  7. Step 7

Teachers write Letters of Recommendation often and know the importance of them. However, if the teacher does not finish the letter by the time you need it, it is probably time to ask someone else to write the letter.

  8. Step 8

    Good Luck!

Tips & Warnings
  • Be very polite and considerate. If the teacher does not complete the letter, do not nag him or her.
