How to make homemade onion rings

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 2 large sweet onions
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 1/2 cups buttermilk
  • 3 tablespoons water
  • 1 3/4 cups all purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • oil for deep frying
  1. Step 1

If you like the frozen bought onion rings you will love the homemade ones. With a little time and effort you can have delicious homemade onion rings. I enjoy trying to make new things and seeing if mine turns out better than those at the store. First you need to cut your onions into 1/4 inch thick slices. This is the hardest part of this recipe. Once you finish cutting the onions the rest of the work is a piece of cake.

  2. Step 2

In a large bowl you will need to put your buttermilk and onions in this bowl and allow them to soak for 30 minutes or more. You will need to stir occasionally so that they are covered. Then in a shallow bowl you will need to beat the eggs and water together. In other bowl you will need to combine the flour, salt, and garlic powder. You will then need to drain the excess buttermilk off of your onion rings. You will then need to dip them in your egg mixture. Then you will roll them in your flour mixture.

  3. Step 3

In a electric skillet or deep fryer heat your oil to 375 degrees. You need enough oil to cover the onion ring. Fry only a few at a time so that they do not stick together. Fry for 1 to 1/2 minutes or until golden brown. Drain on paper towels to avoid having excess grease. This makes approximately 8 servings. When finished you have a delicious treat.

Tips & Warnings
  • drain all excess buttermilk
  • do not overcook
