Step 1
Teach your children to look both ways before they cross the street and while they cross the street.
-
Step 2
Have your children cross the street with a cross guard.
If there aren't any crossing guards in your town, find a route with streets that are less traveled. The less the traffic, the less the risk for an accident. -
Step 3
Do not let your child cross alone until they are at least ten years old.
Children younger than ten have a field of vision that is greatly diminished than those of an adult. As such, they are at a greater risk of not seeing a car. Also, their directional hearing isn't as sharp or as developed as an adults so they may not know where the sound is coming from. -
Step 4
Remind your child that they should never dart into the street and never go between parked cars. Going between parked cars is the number one ways children get hurt after school.
-
Step 5
Dress your children in sporting reflective materials so that if they walk at night, they will be easily seen.
You can also have reflective material on their backpack, shoes, coats.
