Things You'll Need:
- sunglasses with UV protection
- a wide-brimmed hat
- sun protective clothing
- sunscreen with UVA and UVB protection
-
Step 1
If possible, avoid going out between the hours of 10 am and 4 pm. UV rays from the sun are at their strongest during this time of day. At the very least, take shelter in shady areas whenever you can.
-
Step 2
Use sun protective gear. Things like a hat, an umbrella, and a pair of sunglasses (with UV protection) help keep the sun from damaging your delicate skin and eyes. It’s also a good idea to wear as much clothing as you can comfortably stand while in the heat. The more covered up you are, the less risk you are of being exposed to harmful skin cancer-causing UV rays.
-
Step 3
Now that you’ve covered up as much skin as you can, it’s time to slather sunscreen on all your exposed body parts. Buy a sunscreen that protects from harmful UVA and UVB rays and has a minimum rating of SPF 15. The sunscreen should be generously applied 20 minutes being heading outside. If you have fair skin or know that your skin burns easily, it’s important to apply a sunscreen with a higher SPF to get the maximum protection.
-
Step 4
As you enjoy your romp in the great outdoors, don’t think the battle against skin cancer is over just yet. Sunscreen needs to be reapplied after about 2 hours. Apply it more often if you’ve been sweating a lot or swimming in the water.
