First you need to know the rules of the cemetery in which you wish to place flowers. Each has different rules but most do allow you to plant flowers in the ground. Some have restrictions about what can be done and you should research before doing anything. For instance, some allow you to keep perennial plants, but require you to cut them back in the fall. Others will do it for you, generally for a fee. Some insist all flowers must be removed at the end of the season.

Once you know the rules and have decided what flowers you wish to plant there, start by looking at your own garden. What perennials do you own that would do well at the site?

If you don't currently own plants that would be suitable think about going to some local garden club sales to acquire some plants that would suit that location. There are many resources for acquiring inexpensive perennials.

If possible bring some good quality soil to create a base for the plants to grow in. If the cemetery allows it you might consider mulching around the plants to decrease weed growth.

When the growing season has passed follow the directions for plants in your area. Here I cut back my plants before winter hits, and clean away the dead growth, replacing it with leaves and other compost to protect the plants from the harshness of winter. This allows the spring plants to come up unhindered by their own dead leaves that need to be cut back.

If your cemetery has a policy that all plants must be removed by a certain date, take the plants home with you. Replant them in your yard until spring. The savings in not having to buy new plants for the spring, will be well worth it.
