Just like English, there are several ways to say hello in Russian. The Russian spellings are tough to duplicate, so it helps to have a pronounciation guide.

      Hello sounds like Zdrras-tvooy-teh and is usuable in all situations. Broken into three parts the word sounds like "zdrraz" (roll the r a little bit), "vee," "tiet" (try saying yet with a t before the y. Put it all together with Zdrazveetyet. You can also shorten it a bit by simply saying Zdrazveet although it is considered less formal.

      For good morning, say "Doe," "brro-yeh" (again roll the r a little), "uu," and "tro." All together it sounds like "Doebrrie uutro."

      The informal "Hi" should only be used with people with whom you know well. Say "Priv" and "yet" for "Priv-yet."

Tips & Warnings

  • To roll your r's, the tongue should touch the roof of your mouth just behind your front teeth. Dobroe uutro should be used after midnight and until about noon. Dobri dayne should be used from noon to 5 p.m.
