Buy Safely on Craigslist

Craigslist has been portrayed negatively in the news alot lately, but buying items on Craigslist can be done safely if you follow these simple rules.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • A friend
  • Cash
  1. Step 1

Make and verify contact. Contact the seller by emailing or by telephone. Make sure you ask plenty of questions about the item. Agree on a price before agreeing to meet. Make clear that you need to verify the item before committing to buy.

  2. Step 2

Location Location Location. Choose a public location for the transaction to take place. A shopping center parking lot is best since there is always pedestrian foot traffic. If the item is large and requires you to pick up at there home, that be considered safe as well.

  3. Step 3

Bring a friend. This is important, you have power in numbers, and are not likely to get scammed or ripped off if you have a friend with you.

  4. Step 4

Bring Cash, do not haggle, pay the agreed on price. Place exact amount (in cash) in an envelope. Do not openly display your wallet or purse during transaction. If the item is as described and you are still interested in the item, just pay them the price you agreed on during contact.
