There are many people who would love to be able to grow a garden, but find that they are limited on space to do so. Rentals, duplexes, apartments and townhouses do not often provide much area to cultivate, if any. Some rentals may have large yards, but also have restrictions on tilling up the ground or building raised beds for planting. There is another option that will still allow you to grow a garden without needing to till up the soil or even have a yard of your own.

Things You'll Need:

Find your space. A garden can be grown anywhere there is enough sunlight. This means, if you have a patio, deck, balcony, or even just well lit windows, then you can grow many of the fruits and vegetables you want. Simply look around and think of all the places on your property, or even in your home, where there is sufficient sunlight. These places become your garden area.

Going to pot. Just because traditionally a garden is tilled into the ground or planted in large raised beds doesn't mean that is how it has to be done. Go to your local home improvement store and pick up some flower pots. You will want to get larger pots for most things you intend to plant. They may be tiny seeds now, but they will grow to large plants eventually.

Also get some good quality potting soil, enough to fill all your pots and any seeds you wish to plant. Pot gardens work well for fruits and vegetables like tomatoes, carrots, onions, radishes, strawberries, even lettuce and cabbage. Corn can be grown in pots as well. Beans and peas can also be grown in a garden with limited space. For these types of vegetables, use the long rectangular flower pots, rather than the round ones. You will want to rig up a string across the top for the beans to climb.

Plant and grow. Place your pots in your designated area (or areas) and fill with the potting soil. Plant your seeds as directed by the packet. Remember though that seeds planted in flower pots have less room for the roots to spread out, so don't plant too many seeds in the same container. Water well every day. Watch your garden grow. While a flower pot garden may not produce as much food as a traditional garden, it is a great alternative for those with limited space.

Tips & Warnings
  • Be sure to get the bases for your flower pots, as they often are sold separately.
  • If growing corn in a pot, keep it to one or two stalks in the pot, depending on the flower pot size and limited garden space you have available.
  • Flower pot gardens are also great summer projects for kids.
