Use an Agency to Find a Childcare Job
Use an Agency to Find a Childcare Job

Starting a career in childcare isn't as easy as landing a weekend babysitting job. Being a full-time nanny is a big commitment, and finding the right family can be difficult. Many nannies find employment through recruiting agencies who place them with families. Here's how.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • computer
  • internet
  • phone
  • patience
  1. Step 1

*Google nanny placement services in your area.

Look at their websites and see which ones look more impressive. Make sure they are legitimate businesses. Find out which are considered the best by childcare professionals and organizations.

  2. Step 2

*Apply to whichever one looks best.

Most have online applications, others still make you fax your application over. Fill out the forms neatly and thoughtfully. Expect a phone call within the next 24 hours.

  3. Step 3

    *Schedule your first interview.

Be sure to bring whatever identification is necessary. Dress modestly and professionally. Don't overdo it on the makeup.

  4. Step 4

    *Meet agency staff for interview.

Be prepared for questions such as "What is your philosophy on discipline?" Take your time and answer the questions thoughtfully. Make sure the staff explains the agency's role before you leave.

  5. Step 5

*Wait for a family to call you and schedule another interview.

The agency picks who they think you'll mesh with after the interview, and it's up to the family to contact you. Until then, you wait. And read up on the types of questions they'll be asking (and what you should be asking).

  6. Step 6

*Make sure both parties are satisfied with the arrangement before any contracts are signed.

Make sure you are being paid enough, and that there are no major conflicts on the horizon.

  7. Step 7

*Go to work with your new family.

If there are any issues in the future, your agency will gladly act as mediator. If you followed step #6, you should get along with your employees for the most part.

Tips & Warnings
  • Read sample interview questions before you meet the family
  • Bring your resume to be safe
  • Don't go through multiple agencies at once
  • Don't accept a job with a family that makes you uncomfortable
