How to Turn Off Safe Mode on Windows Vista

When Windows Vista is in Safe Mode, it is running with a minimal set of drivers. This mode is useful for diagnosing and correcting many computer problems, but it comes at the expense of limited functionality. Once you've used Safe Mode to make the changes or repairs that you need to make, it's best to revert back to Normal Mode. To completely turn off Safe Mode and go back to Normal Mode, though, you must specifically instruct Vista to boot up in Normal Mode.

Instructions

Click the "Start" button in the bottom left corner of Vista in Safe Mode and select "Turn Off Computer". Select 'Restart" from the pop-up menu.

    • 2

Place your finger over the F8 key as the computer shuts down and reboots. As soon as it begins booting up, start pressing F8 repeatedly.

    • 3

Stop pressing F8 when you see a menu of options appear on the screen. This is the boot menu. Select "Normal Mode" from the boot menu by either hitting the number next to Normal Mode, or by using the arrow keys to highlight Normal Mode and then pressing "Enter."

Wait for Vista to boot up in Normal Mode. If you determine that you need to switch back to Safe Mode, just reboot the computer, press F8 during boot-up and select "Safe Mode" from the boot menu.
