RM is a RealMedia file format. In creation by RealNetworks, it is often a streaming Internet video file. You can either download to disk or run directly from the Internet to view. However, you will need a Real Player Media program to run the file. WMV is a "Windows Media Player" file. This can also be streaming video from the Internet or downloadable to your computer. If you have an RM file, but do not have the Real Media Player, you can convert your video to WMV.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • RM to WMV conversion application
  1. Step 1

Acquire an RM to WMV conversion program. Boilsoft RM Converter (2009: $28.45) and Power RM Converter (2009: $19.95) change RM video files to several formats, including WMV. You can choose other RM to WMV conversion applications as well.

  2. Step 2

Insert the RM file(s). With Boilsoft, press the "Add" button. Search for the RM file and highlight. Then select the "Open" button. In Power RM, click the "Add Files" tab. Choose the RM file and press "Open."

  3. Step 3

Change the "Output" file format. In Boilsoft, modify the "Output Format" to "WMV." With Power RM, alter the "Profile" option. Scroll down to the bottom of the list and select "WMV." Insert an "Output Folder" by using the "Browse" button.

  4. Step 4

Begin converting. With Boilsoft, click the "Convert" button. In Power RM, press the "Convert" tab. Let the conversion complete, approximately 3 minutes, depending on the size of the RM video.

Tips & Warnings
  • The trial version of Boilsoft RM Converter adds a watermark to the WMV output file. In Power RM Converter, the trial version limits the conversion minutes of the WMV file.
