Choppy straight hair is an edgy look that is always in style. If you hair is straight or curly, it is possible to achieve the appearance of choppy straight hair with the right cut and style. Read on for some tips on how to achieve this look.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Shampoo the hair before cutting. Begin the haircut by cutting initial layers that are short or long, depending on the style. If your hair is straight or curly, you should begin with a cut where the stylist chips into or bevels the ends of each section of hair. This is done by holding up a section of hair about 1/2 inch wide and finger length, and holding the scissors at a vertical angle facing down into the hair section. The stylist then cuts triangular chips out of the ends of the hair instead of cutting a straight edge. This gives the hair a choppy effect.

  2. Step 2

Get a razor haircut. Take out the bulk using a razor after the ends are chipped. The haircutter should comb a section of the hair that is about a 1/2 inch wide and almost the length of the fingers, and hold at about a half inch from the ends. The hairstylist should glide the sharp end of the razor over the top portion of the hair section toward the fingers. The blade should be facing the hair stylist as she pulls the blade up the hair shaft to remove bulk. Be sure to not cut too close to the scalp to avoid very short pieces. Start with a little hair removal and gradually increase to get a more textured effect. The focus should be at the ends of the hair and around the face in particular to create a choppy effect. The thicker the hair, the more razor cutting should be done.

  3. Step 3

Use a texturizing creme or gel if your hair is straight. Put a small amount on your thumb and forefinger and pull one-eighth to 1/2-inch sections of hair between fingers into points to give hair a choppy effect. Run fingers through hair in a combing motion to create a separated effect as well.

  4. Step 4

For curly hair, put in a straightening creme and then section the hair and use a flat iron to straighten. Use medium to high heat and pull the flat iron through each section of the hair until straight. Be sure not to bend the ends. After hair has been straightened, follow the steps above for straight hair, using texturizing creme or gel to complete the effect.

Tips & Warnings
  • Use texturizing creme or gel sparingly so hair does not look greasy.
