How to Convert Grains into Ounces
The grain is one of the smallest of common measures. Originally representing the weight of a single grain of barley, it is the lowest common weight in avoirdupois, troy and apothecary weights. Three medium barley grains, when laid end to end, were the basis for the inch in early England, and the English penny was the weight of 32 wheat grains, which weighed three-quarters as much as a grain of barley. Since 1958, the grain has been determined to be equal to 64.8 milligrams in the International System of Units (SI units).

Don't bother looking for an avoirdupois grain; while there is a "troy grain," there is no such thing as an "avoirdupois grain." As a measure of weight or mass, the grain was originally a grain of wheat or barley.
