Fonts add variety and visual interest to documents that you create in your word processing or desktop publishing software application. Early varieties of fonts were created at preestablished sizes, and the sizes could not be changed. Later varieties of fonts, such as Type 1 fonts, were designed to be scalable to different sizes. Windows XP includes a standard set of fonts as part of the basic operating system, and it is possible to install new fonts, including Type 1 fonts, in Windows XP.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Click the "Start" button; then click the "Control Panel" icon on the Start menu. This will open the Control Panel.

  2. Step 2

Click the "Switch to Classic View" icon in the right-side navigation pane of the Control Panel if the Control Panel is not already in classic view. Once the Control Panel is in classic view, the "Fonts" icon will be displayed.

  3. Step 3

Click the "Fonts" icon to open the Fonts window. Click the "File" link in the menu bar of the Fonts window; then click the "Install New Font" link. This will open the Add Fonts window.

  4. Step 4

Select the drive, such as the CD drive or floppy disk drive, that contains the fonts you want to install; then select the folder on that drive where the fonts are located. The fonts will then be displayed in the "List of Fonts" box.

  5. Step 5

Click to highlight the fonts you want to install in the List of Fonts box, or click the "Select All" button to install all the fonts. Click the "OK" button to install the fonts and complete the process.
