How to Construct a Spray Paint Booth for Hobbies

There are times when spraying an item with acrylic spray or shellac finish is better than trying to brush it on the product. This calls for ventilation and an enclosure so that the spray doesn't fly all over the place. If you plan to do a lot of spraying, you will need a dedicated place in a garage, but if you are able to take advantage of the outdoors, this is a much easier project--and ventilation won't be a problem.

Things You'll Need

  • 4 lengths of pine (1 by 2 by 72 inches)
  • 6 (1 by 2 by 60 inches)
  • 3 cardboard pieces (60 by 72 inches)
  • Scrap sheets of cardboard
  • Hammer
  • Galvanized nails
  • Drop cloths
  • Staple gun

Instructions

    • 1

Build the frame of the spray booth. Nail a 72-inch length of pine to a perpendicular, 60-inch piece--one at the top and one at the bottom, forming one of the three sides. Repeat with the other two sides. Lay one side down flat and nail another side perpendicular to one end to form a 90-degree angle frame. Attach the other side so that when you stand the frame up it has two sides and a back.

    • 2

Use a staple gun to attach cardboard to the inside of each frame. If your cardboard isn't big enough, use sturdy, wide tape to attach sections until you have the correct size. Attach a final piece across the top. Leave the bottom open. Lay random pieces of scrap cardboard down so you don't spray on the grass.

    • 3

Drape painter's sheeting over the top and down all four sides of the paint booth and staple it in place. This will allow you to store it outside without having to worry about moisture.

    • 4

On the open side, cut the plastic sheeting up to the top in the middle. Pull back the sheeting when you're spraying, then drop it shut to keep dust off of your newly-sprayed items.

Tips & Warnings

  • Decrease the size of the spray booth if you are only working on small pieces.

  • Do not use this spray booth inside a closed garage, unless you set a box fan in the opening to dissipate paint fumes. Always keep the front of the booth open while you spray.
