Instructions

  1. Apply Over an Existing Finish

    • 1

Thoroughly clean the piece you are finishing. Wipe the surface with a damp cloth. Then use a soft cloth dampened with mineral spirits to remove any remaining soil. Dry with a clean cloth.

    • 2

Rough up the surface by gently rubbing it with fine to medium grade sandpaper. This helps the stain more readily adhere to the wood. Wipe off sanding dust with a clean, damp cloth.

    • 3

Brush on Minwax stain topcoat with a foam or synthetic paint brush. Brush on stain following the direction of the wood grain. Apply a generous, even coat.

    • 4

Allow product to dry for approximately one hour.

    • 5

Brush on second coat using the same techniques as you did when applying the first coat.

    • 6

Allow the product to dry for 24 hours.

    • 7

Buff surface with 000 grade, extra fine steel wool. This will even out and smooth the finish, removing any small bits of dust or other imperfections. Buff with the grain of the wood, using light pressure.

    Apply to Raw, Unfinished Wood

    • 8

Lightly sand the raw wood using fine to medium grade sandpaper. This will rough up the surface of the wood and help the stain stick better. It will also help to smooth over imperfections in the raw wood. Wipe off sanding dust with a clean, damp cloth.

    • 9

Apply Minwax stain topcoat mix with a foam or synthetic brush. Brush on stain in the same direction as the wood grain. Apply a thick, even coat to achieve consistent color and even coverage of the piece.

    • 10

Allow to dry for approximately one hour.

    • 11

If desired, apply a second coat.

    • 12

Allow to dry for 24 hours.

    • 13

Smooth the surface by buffing with 000 grade extra fine steel wool. Follow the grain of the wood and rub lightly. This step gives the wood a smooth finish and removes any bits of dust or dirt that drifted onto and adhered to the wet finish.

Tips & Warnings

  • If there are any areas of the final finish that appear lighter than others, touch up by applying additional Minwax with a small brush. Allow to dry, and buff with steel wool.

  • Provide adequate ventilation when working with wood finishing products.
