How to Use Stopwatches for Running

Using a stopwatch while running is essential. It does not matter whether the individual is a 10- or five-minute miler, using a stopwatch will help record progress, and allow for precise time and pace. There are numerous functions to a stopwatch, but the most important feature is having the capability to store data. When training or racing, it is important have the ability to monitor each mile time to determine the pace. The memory function provides the runner with a constant reminder of how the training session or race is progressing.

      When using a stopwatch and/or running watch, make sure the "Run" function is displayed. On most running watches, the "Run" function is the second function. To get to this feature, press the mode button once.

      Once you have reached the "Run" function, you will notice its stopwatch feature. To begin the stopwatch, press the button marked "Start/Lap."

      When trying to obtain split times--whether during an interval workout or race--press the "Start/Lap" once. When the button is pressed, the previous lap is stored while a new running time begins. Repeat this step when necessary.

      To stop the watch, press the button marked "Stop."

      Now that the run is complete, it's time to view each lap. Depending on the stopwatch/running watch, there will be a separate button to review your splits. Continue to press this button to get to the next lap.

      The final step is to save the information or reset the watch. To save the information, hold down the button that has "Save" pointing to it for 3 seconds. To reset the watch, hold down the button that has "Reset" pointing to it for 3 seconds.

  • Purchase a stopwatch/running watch that has the ability to store multiple laps. Find a watch that is water-resistant. Make sure the running time is clearly visible.
