When replacing or removing a florescent light, there are many points to consider. The first step is to inspect the light to determine if the light can be removed safely. Find out how the light is being held in place, and determine what tools will be needed to remove it.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Ladder
  • Wire cutters
  • Wire caps
  • Screw driver or drill
  • Hammer
  1. Step 1

Locate your home's main electrical box and turn off the breaker to the fluorescent light. Test the light by switching it to the "on" position to ensure that the power is cut off. While you are working, keep the light switch on the "off" position in case power is accidentally turned back on.

  2. Step 2

Place a ladder by the light, or under the light, so that it can be inspected and removed. Make sure that the ladder is in a safe and secure position.

  3. Step 3

Determine how to remove the florescent light housing depending on how the light is attached to the ceiling. Your light may be hung with screws directly through the housing, with suspension wires if it is a suspended ceiling, or by brackets and nails.

  4. Step 4

Disconnect the housing by using either a screw driver or a nail puller, depending on how your light is attached to the ceiling.

  5. Step 5

Disconnect the electrical wires from the fluorescent light using a wire cutter to cut the wires. Use wire caps to cover the exposed ends of the wires. If the fluorescent light is being replaced or different lighting is being installed, wire caps will not be needed.

Tips & Warnings
  • When removing the fluorescent light, enlist in the help of a friend or family member. Your helper can hold the ladder while you are working, as well as help you remove the light if it is heavy and cumbersome.
