Comic Book DS is a comic book viewer that allows you to view image-based documents on your Nintendo DS when you are not online. The file extension for Comic Book DS files is .cbds. Comic Book DS is a homebrew application that is neither authored nor endorsed by Nintendo. Because the program uses a proprietary file format, you may want to convert your existing PDF documents to the CBDS format.

Instructions

    • 1

Visit the PDFill website. Download and install PDFill using all the default settings.

    • 2

Download and unzip PictoDS. No installation is required, as the application unzips into its own directory structure.

    • 3

Open PDFill. From the "Tools" menu, choose "PDF Tools (no watermark.)"

    • 4

Select "Convert PDF to images." Navigate to the PDF file to be converted and click "Open."

    • 5

Leave the image resolution at the default setting and select "jpg" for the image type. Click "Save as image." The default save location is the "Documents" folder. Close PDFill.

    • 6

Depending on the number of pages in the PDF document, the "Documents" folder will contain the converted images. Using an appropriate compression program, add all of the images to be converted to .cbds files to an archive (e.g., "Images1.zip")

    • 7

      Open PictoDS.

    • 8

From the main window, select "Add file." Navigate to the location of the .zip or .rar folder. Select the folder and click "Open."

    • 9

The folder will appear in the main window. Leave the default settings in place and click the "Proceed" button at the bottom of the window.

    • 10

After a few seconds, the program will sound a tone and the "Status" column in the main window will change to "OK." This shows that the conversion is complete.

Tips & Warnings

  • The default "Save" location for the converted .cbds files is within the "\cbds" folder within the PictoDS directory structure. Opening that folder will reveal the converted files.

  • PictoDS converts image files to .cbds files, but it can only do so from inside an archive such as a .zip or .rar folder. An attempt to select an individual .jpg file will result in an error. If you wish to convert a single .jpg, you must first add it to its own individual archive.

  • If you are familiar with command-line editing, you can tinker with the settings (e.g., "Save" locations, file types).

  • Scan programs--particularly freeware--downloaded from the Internet for viruses. Virus infection is unlikely, but it is always a risk, especially if the program is downloaded from a file-sharing site such as Kazaa.
