How to Sell Antique Coins

Sell your old coins safely and profitably.

Selling your antique coins may seem like an uncomplicated task, but there are several pitfalls to avoid in order to get the best price for your merchandise.

Instructions

1. Purchase and study collector books and Internet sites that specialize in coin collecting, selling and buying antique coins (see Resources). Buy the most recently-published books and visit several sites to learn more about your coin, its history and its selling potential.

2. Find a reputable coin evaluator who can educate you about your coin and its value, and tell you how well it is currently selling. See Resources for a list of dealers and evaluators.

3. Comparison shop to see what other retailers are paying for your coin. Cross reference online coin vendors to find the highest and lowest prices. Many antique stores sell valuable old coins, so be sure to include them as a source of information and a possible buyer.

4. Check the credentials of potential buyers. Research their experience and how long they have been in business. Obtain references from previous clients.

Tips & Warnings

• Be wary if a coin dealer does not examine your coins carefully, and makes a quick offer; you may not be getting the best price. Don't sell to the first shop you investigate, even if they have a good reputation. Shop around and compare.
