Weigelia shrubs are among the most popular and most beautiful ground cover for gardens and borders. They are very easy to plant and grow, adapting well to most soils. It is important, however, to plant your shrubs in sunlight. There are nearly two hundred varieties of weigelia shrubs, in a range of hues and shades. Weigelia shrubs bloom in the spring, but some will actually bloom again in the summer. The foliage comes in a wide variety of colors, including dark green, yellow-edged and purple.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Shovel
  • Mulch
  1. Step 1

Dig a hole that's twice the size of your weigelia shrub's root ball. Make the hole deep enough so that the shrub can be planted at the same depth as the pot it came in. If your soil is not high quality, dig the hole even wider so you can add manure, humous or another enriching agent.

  2. Step 2

Gently remove the weigelia shrub from its container and carefully separate the roots. Do not leave the roots circled in a ball, they need to grow out into the ground.

  3. Step 3

Place your weigelia shrub in the middle of the hole. Fill in the hole with dirt, and any enriching agent.

  4. Step 4

Build a water well for your shrub. Mound up the soil around the outer edge of the hole. Depending upon how big your shrub is, the height of your mound may range from several inches to 1 foot. Cover the inside of your water well with mulch to ensure that the ground around your shrub remains moist.

Tips & Warnings
  • Be sure to leave room in your borders for weigelia shrubs to grow out, as well as up. Some varieties can grow 10 feet tall.
