How to Configure a DNS

DNS is a domain name service whose purpose is to resolve host names to IP addresses and allow computers to communicate by IP address. It is relatively easy to configure DNS.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the Windows "Start" menu. Click "Network Settings." You may need to click "Control Panel" to reach the network connections.

    • 2

Right-click your local area connection and then select "Properties." Under the "General" tab, select "TCP/IP Internet Protocol" and then select "Properties." Click the button to obtain the DNS server address, which will automatically register your computer with a DNS server.

    • 3

Set up "TCP/IP." Click "Start," then "Settings" and then "Network Settings." Right-click the local area connection. Select properties, select TCP/IP and then select properties.

    • 4

Click the "General" tab. Select "Use the following IP address." Your server controls a domain and must have an IP address that serves the domain. Type in the IP address, the subnet mask and the default gateway address of the domain.

    • 5

Click the "Advanced" button in the DNS box. Select "DNS." Select "Append primary and connection specific DNS suffixes," then "Append parent suffixes of the primary DNS suffix," and then "Register this connection's address in DNS."

    • 6

Configure DNS on the server. Open the Windows "Start"menu. Select "All Programs" and then select "Administrative Tools." Click "DNS." Right-click on the forward lookup zone and then select "New Zone." Select the primary zone and then click "Next." Accept the default name and click "Next." DNS is now configured on the server.
