Thank about the type of network you want to create. Business connections are like a web. Each interaction you have with someone is another part of the web that leads you to new connections. Pick out some key areas that you want to start to develop contacts. When you encounter people with these connections, you will be reminded of your interest.

Be prepared to exchange contact information. Keep an inventory of business cards on hand to make exchanging information quick and easy. If you are more technology-focused, create a v-card that can be easily attached to email and sent from your PC or Blackberry.

Who should you connect with? Everyone! Take as many opportunities as you can to find out what the people you meet do. Try to find a commonality or a connection. Tell them about what you do.Offer them your business card and ask them if they have one that you can have. Keep track of the contacts you collect in a Rolodex, with a PDA such as a Blackberry, or through your contact list in Microsoft Outlook.

Do some light research on their companies. If you find yourself in the position of needing services that someone you've met offers, give them a call. If an opportunity comes up that is related your commonality, invite them to participate.

Stay in touch. If you haven't seen or heard from a contact, send them an email just to see how things are going--they will appreciate it. Before you know it, you will have a fully functioning business network of connections.
