Metal detectors are electronic devices used to locate metal objects buried under the ground. Metal detectors are available in a wide range of models and prices, and highly sensitive detectors can be quite pricey. If travelling with a metal detector, it is important to carefully pack the unit.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Crush-proof case
  • Sharpie marker
  • Knife
  1. Step 1

Consider crush-proof travel cases such as Pelican, Storm Proof or Underwater Kinetics. These companies offer dry boxes with and without foam padding which can make transporting sensitive and fragile equipment safer.

  2. Step 2

Determine the best sized case for the metal detector. Make sure to break the unit down to the smallest size possible. Also consider the foam padding which may be available in a pre-cut version which allows for removal of the foam in small blocks so that a custom fit can be achieved.

  3. Step 3

Place the detector in the box and use a marker to outline the unit onto the foam in the box. If the foam features small removable blocks, remove the blocks which have an outline mark and lift out the interior pieces. If the foam is solid, use a knife to cut the outline of the unit from the foam.

  4. Step 4

Place the unit in the foam of the dry box and check for fit. Many times there will be one or two thin layers of foam underneath the larger foam core block which allows for additional customization should the case not close due to the size of the unit.

  5. Step 5

Remove the unit and make any adjustments. Replace the unit in the foam of the case and close the lid to ensure a good fit.

Tips & Warnings
  • Use caution when cutting the foam with a knife. Make sure the blade is pointed away from the body and downward if possible.
