How to Draw Monkeys
Monkeys and other primates have been fascinating to humans long before their relationship to humans was proven. Our closest cousins in the animal kingdom have appeared in children's stories, like "Curious George," but they have also been represented in art in a more realistic fashion, like the painting by Henri Julien Rousseau, "Apes In The Orange Grove" or "Apes in the Kitchen" by David The Younger Teniers.

Cartoon Monkey

Study the image of the cartoon monkey available in the resources section below. Observe the rudimentary shapes that make up his body.

Sketch out the cartoon monkey's head and body. His head should be a slightly flattened circle, and his body should be an oval shape, slightly overlapping with the head.

Sketch out oval shapes for the cartoon monkey's mouth, right arm, and legs. His mouth oval should overlap his head, and his limbs should overlap with his oval body.

Use the circles and ovals as a guide to draw the cartoon monkey's facial features, ear, arms, and legs. Erase the guiding lines.

Study the image of the capuchin monkey, available in the resources section below. Sketch out the capuchin monkey's head, which is a triangular shape, and its face, which is more of an oval shape. Sketch the general shape of the capuchin monkey's body, which is an oval shape also, approximately the same diameter as the triangular head.

Sketch the general shapes that make up the capuchin monkeys arms and hands. The capuchin monkey's upper arm is rectangular, its forearm is triangular or trapezoidal, and its hands are squarish.

Study the capuchin monkey's facial features and sketch them out. The capuchin monkey's nose and mouth look like an upside down ice cream cone, and its eyes slope downwards at the sides.

Draw the capuchin monkey's facial features in detail. Use shading where necessary to give the capuchin monkey's face a three-dimensional feel.

Draw the capuchin monkey's hands and black nails. Using fast, jagged lines, draw the fur on the capuchin monkey. For the darker fur on the capuchin monkey's breast and forearms, draw denser jagged lines.
