Before universal serial ports (such as universal serial bus, or USB), parallel printers were the way that consumers connected a printer to their computer. Many printers today still connect with this method and are simple to set up and use. Because of the vast amount of drivers that are available in the Windows OS software, many of these printers are simply plug and play, so you do not need a driver disk to install them.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Computer
  • Parallel printer cable
  • Printer
  1. Step 1

Write down the make and model of the parallel printer you plan to connect to your computer.

  2. Step 2

Connect one end of the parallel cable to the printer.

  3. Step 3

Connect the other end of the parallel cable to the parallel port on your computer. The port on the computer is long and thin, with openings for 25 pins.

  4. Step 4

Reboot your computer if Windows doesn't notify you that it has found new hardware. If Windows does find the printer, no further action is needed.

  5. Step 5

Choose the option to select from a list when the New Hardware wizard opens after Windows reloads on your computer.

  6. Step 6

Scroll down the list of printer manufacturers until you locate the maker of the printer.

  7. Step 7

Select the model number of the printer from the listed printers in the windowpane.

  8. Step 8

Click "OK" to install the printer drivers needed.

Tips & Warnings
  • If Windows does not have the drivers needed for the printer you are connecting, search Driversguide.com for the needed drivers. Download the drivers to your computer and install them. Some printers have the option of connecting through the parallel or USB port. Choose the option that best fits your needs. If you already have a device attached to your parallel port, such as a scanner or a zip drive, it may have a pass-through connection so that you can connect the printer also. If you do not have a parallel port on your computer, you can purchase an adapter that will allow you to connect the computer through the USB port.
