Keota, a forgotton town in northeastern Colorado.

America is littered with ghost towns and ruins that make for an interesting trip. If you're adventurous, you can start exploring ruins in your state in your free time. Follow these steps and go explore the crumbling buildings before they're gone.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Internet
  • Google Earth
  • Car
  • Camera
  • Extra Time
  • Emergency provisions (water, food, spare tire)
  1. Step 1

Google search ghost towns in your area.

Make a list of ones that look interesting. There are lots of sites with information on ghost towns to choose from.

  2. Step 2

Research the towns on your list.

Read about the towns' history, current state, and location. Make sure you have accurate information.

  3. Step 3

    Narrow your choice to one.

Check out forums to make sure some ruins still stand in the town of your choice. Some websites have outdated information, so it's best to try and find someone who's recently been there.

  4. Step 4

Make sure your car is running well.

You don't want to get a flat tire on an unpaved country road, and you don't want your engine to overheat in the desert. Preventative maintenance is key.

  5. Step 5

Print out directions to you town of choice.

You may need to use Google Earth if the town is not on a map. Some ghost towns no longer warrant mention on newer maps, so be sure to find out exactly where to go before you leave.

  6. Step 6

    Bring your camera and explore!

Tips & Warnings
  • Make sure to gas up, as your destination is likely far from any gas station.
  • Experiment with lighting and angles when you are taking pictures
  • Don't go anywhere isolated or dangerous without another person unless you are extremely prepared
