Step 1
Sing a Major 3rd above or a Perfect 4th below the melody. To do this, simply sing either 4 pitches higher or 5 pitches lower than each note.
-
Step 2
If you are singing harmony with more than one person and someone else is already singing the 3rds, try singing a perfect fifth (7 pitches) above the melody or sing the 5 pitches lower as suggested above.
-
Step 3
If you have the sheet music, you can sing one of the accompaniment lines. The second voice (alto) in piano accompaniment usually works beautifully.
-
Step 4
Listen to examples. Listen to people sing the song you like in harmony, or find an example online. www.playlist.com is a great place to listen to songs for free.
-
Step 5
Avoid dissonant sounds until you are much more experienced because dissonant harmony needs to be used in certain ways to sound good.

on 6/12/2009 I know how a choir works and sings together but wasn't sure about how two people sing in harmony. Thanks for the information.
