The first step is to purchase a fireplace screen that will fit your fireplace opening. There are 2 types of screens one that screw directly into the walls of the fireplace with screws and one that uses hand screws to mount.

For the handscrew type you need to fit the screen up to the opening and hand screw the screws into the side of the brick fireplace. Try to find a spot with a small groove to hold it. My fireplace was flat so I used a concrete drill bit and marked where the screw hit the side of the fireplace and drilled a 1/8 inch deep hole. Then I hand screwed it into that hole adn it works great.

The other type of mounting is with screws directly into the fireplace. On this type you need to pre drill the holes and then use concrete plugs normally supplied by the screen manufacturer. Then screw the supplied screws into the concrete plugs. This will hold for years to come.
