Want to get started in photography? This article will help you get started on the basic essentials.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Money
  • Dedication
  • Eyes
  1. Step 1

You'll need to find out what brand of camera you will want. Canon and Nikon are currently the big names. However, Sony and Olympus also make great DSLR's.

  2. Step 2

Once you decide on what brand you are most interested in, you'll want to find a model that best suits your needs. Both Nikon and Canon have a similar lineup. You can either get a small consumer DSLR or pick a more larger professional body. Each have their advantages and disadvantages, but at the end of the day, it's all about how it will suit your lifestyle.

  3. Step 3

You'll need a lens for your camera. Most DSLR's come with a kit lens; but if you want your image to look more professional, buying a better lens would be a good idea. You can find reviews on almost every lens on the site below. Different lens will be good for different shooting situations so keep that in mind when searching for one! :)

  4. Step 4

Extra accessories such as a compact flash memory card, carrying bag, and external flash are vital to any photographer's arsenal. I suggest visiting Amazon.com for these items.

  5. Step 5

Read the manual once you receive your camera and lens. It will not be easy, but learning the ins and outs of your camera will put you on the fast track to taking amazing pictures!

  6. Step 6

Go out and have fun shooting!

Tips & Warnings
  • Take a class on photography to get first hand knowledge from a professional. Many local colleges offer classes like these.
  • It is a good idea not to take your camera body out when it is raining or snowing unless your body is weather sealed.
  • Don't keep the camera in extreme temperature situations.
  • Be careful of buying DSLR's and lens off eBay. Not only are scams more likely, but companies like Canon do not cover the warranty if bought from an unauthorized dealer.
