Many apartment dwellers are taking up gardening, growing vegetables, herbs, flowers, and other plants on their patios, balconies, rooftops, or even inside their apartments. No matter how tiny your apartment, there's room for a few plants. Read on for tips on how you too can have an apartment garden.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • an apartment
  • plants
  • containers and pots
  • seeds
  • balcony, patio, or rooftop, preferably
  • time and energy
  • a plan
  1. Step 1
    apartment balcony

If your apartment has a balcony or patio you are truly blessed and should take complete advantage of that outdoor space, no matter how tiny.

  2. Step 2

Maybe you don't have a balcony in your apartment, but you do have a large window. You can easily grow plants in pots in front of that window.

  3. Step 3

Then there's sprouting. Sprouting might just be the perfect way to grow your own food in an apartment. You can grow fresh, healthy, organic produce in just a few days with just a few simple steps, and using nothing more complicated that a quart canning jar and cheese-cloth if you don't want to purchase a sprouter.

See the resources section below for sprouting information and tips.

  4. Step 4

People have been planting flowers and vegetables in window boxes for centuries, and you can too. All you need is a window box, a place to put it, and the soil and plants to put in the window boxes.

  5. Step 5

If your apartment has a flat rooftop, and you are allowed access to it, you can probably get permission from your landlord to plant some vegetables in containers up there, thus you'll have your very own rooftop garden.

  6. Step 6

Grow lights and hydroponics inside are another apartment gardening idea. See the resources section below for a link to all the information you need on using grow lights indoors or growing plants the hydroponic way.

  7. Step 7

Herb gardens can be grown inside in your kitchen or on a windowsill somewhere in your apartment quite easily.

  8. Step 8

There is also the possibility of joining one of the garden co-ops or community gardens in your area, thus getting your apartment garden that way. If you just can't find a place or way to garden in your actual apartment, or you want more room to garden then a community garden might be the ideal situation for you.

Tips & Warnings
  • Determine to have an apartment garden, no matter what.
  • Planning and preparation are key to a successful apartment garden.
  • Remember to watch out for weight restrictions on balconies.
