Using Cell Phones Can Be Costly

Do you have relatives in the military who need long distance calling cards? Do you plan to travel abroad and wonder what you will do about making long distance calls?

Much to my surprise, my cell phone did not work in Germany. The problem was not the phone. I contacted my carrier before leaving the states. Despite the company stating they granted me access to make calls abroad, the authorization in Germany was not operational.

What did I do? I purchased a calling card at the airport in Frankfurt. The cost was about $!5.00. Upon returning to the United States, I discovered a very inexpensive way to purchase and use calling cards.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

Ability to locate area dollar store establishments
Funds to purchase $1.00 long distance calling cards
Access to a telephone to use the calling cards
Alternatively, access the world wide web and conduct a search for online dollar stores

Step 1

Go to area dollar stores (or go online to their websites) and search for prepaid calling cards.
Step 2

Purchase the card (for about $1.00 plus tax).
Step 3

Use the cards domestically and internationally. Most have no expiration date.
Step 4

For $1.00, you will have equal, or very similar, alloted minutes for calls as for more expensive pre-paid calling cards. Note that many other calling cards expire while the dollar store cards are normally without an expiration date.

Tips & Warnings

Consider purchasing bulk calling cards from dollar stores to send to military personnel.
Save some for others. Usually, the dollar store near my home is sold out when I go to purchase the calling cards.
